Kazakhstan detains 76 foreigners in sweeping drug crackdown
Kazakh authorities have detained 76 foreign nationals on drug-related charges in the first four months of this year. The crackdown uncovered large-scale trafficking, smuggling, and production operations across multiple cities. Police seized significant quantities of synthetic and cannabis-based narcotics during the raids.
In Astana, officers arrested a 32-year-old European national accused of acting as a wholesale drug distributor. They confiscated 1.5 kilograms of synthetic and cannabis-based substances in the operation. Separately, a 21-year-old woman from a neighbouring country was detained in Aktau for dealing mephedrone, with 30 grams seized.
A 44-year-old man from an Eastern European country was apprehended in Almaty after police found 1.2 kilograms of the synthetic drug A-PVP in his possession. Meanwhile, authorities in Karaganda captured a foreign citizen wanted for remotely organising synthetic drug production. Investigations also revealed cases of drug cultivation, advertising, and promotion linked to foreign nationals. The total detentions included 23 individuals for trafficking, 29 for smuggling, and three for large-scale possession. Each case involved coordinated efforts across different regions to disrupt the supply chains.
The operations highlight ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes involving foreign nationals in Kazakhstan. A total of 76 arrests were made between January and April, with substantial quantities of narcotics removed from circulation. Authorities continue to monitor and dismantle networks involved in production, distribution, and smuggling.
