Kazakhstan Court Revokes Driver's License Over Cannabinoid Dependency

A resident of the Zhambyl Region, identified only as Zh., obtained his driver's license in 2023. In 2025, however, authorities discovered that he was registered with a narcology clinic due to a dependency on cannabinoids.

The regional police department filed a lawsuit to revoke his driving privileges. During the court proceedings, the defendant argued that he was the sole breadwinner for his family and worked as a driver.

Nevertheless, prioritizing road safety, the court ruled in favor of the police and stripped Zh. of his right to drive. The decision has since taken effect.

As a reminder, Kazakhstani citizens can now renew their driver's licenses—even after expiration—through the eGov.kz portal or the eGov Mobile app.
