Journalism is democracy's lifeline, says UP Deputy CM at NUJ conference
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya spoke at the National Conference of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Agra. He described journalism as the lifeline of democracy and stressed its role in strengthening democratic institutions across the country. Maurya began by highlighting India’s rapid economic growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He pointed to advancements in self-reliance, defence production, and technology as key achievements. The vision of ‘One Nation, One Election’ was also mentioned as part of the government’s long-term goals.
Addressing the media, he called journalism a powerful medium of public service rather than just a profession. He urged journalists to maintain objectivity, factual accuracy, and a focus on national interest, especially on digital platforms. The deputy chief minister also reminded them of their responsibility to report both governance shortcomings and successes fairly. Reaffirming Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to democratic values, Maurya emphasised the importance of a free and impartial press. He referred to the media as the fourth pillar of democracy and encouraged journalists to contribute constructively to nation-building.
Maurya’s speech underscored the need for responsible journalism in upholding democratic principles. His remarks also highlighted the government’s expectations of media professionals in supporting balanced and truthful reporting.
