Ixtapaluca Trolleybus breaks ground to transform Mexico Valley transit by 2027
Construction has started on the Ixtapaluca Trolleybus, a major extension of the Santa Marta–Chalco line. The 1.721 billion peso project (around $100 million USD) aims to improve transport in southeastern Mexico Valley. Officials expect it to cut travel times, increase ridership, and enhance passenger safety by reducing robberies. The new route will stretch 10 kilometres in each direction, branching off from the existing Line 11 (Santa Marta–Chalco Trolleybus). Work begins at the junction with the current line and follows the old Mexico–Puebla highway. Twelve new stations will serve Ixtapaluca, Valle de Chalco, Chalco, and Los Reyes La Paz.
The project is led by the Integrated Public Train and Transport Agency (Attrapi) under the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT). Juan Hugo de la Rosa García, the State of Mexico’s mobility secretary, outlined the goals: faster journeys, higher capacity, and safer travel. Upgrades are also planned for the north and south bus bays at Constitución de 1917 Station, the terminal for the elevated Line 10 trolleybus. The target completion date is July 17, 2027. Once finished, the extension will integrate with the existing electric trolleybus network, offering a high-capacity alternative for thousands of daily commuters.
The Ixtapaluca Trolleybus will add 20 kilometres of new track and 12 stations to the network. The 1.721 billion peso investment seeks to transform transport in the region. Completion is scheduled for mid-2027, with officials focusing on efficiency and security improvements.
