Iowa Community Colleges Expand Truck Driver Training with Federal Grants
Two Iowa community colleges have secured federal grants to boost commercial truck driver training. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) will use the funds to expand their programs, aiming to help more people enter a high-demand niche with strong job prospects.
The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded EICC £62,000 and NICC £58,000 through its Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Program. The grants will assist active-duty military, veterans, and their families in transitioning to civilian careers by covering training expenses.
EICC runs a five-week course designed for quick and safe workforce integration. NICC's four-week program boasts a 93% job placement rate, ensuring most graduates find work soon after completion. Both colleges highlight the career benefits of earning a commercial driver's licence (CDL), including competitive pay, independence, and travel opportunities.
The region's demand for qualified drivers is projected to grow by 13%. With a CDL, graduates can access jobs at local, regional, and national transport firms. The funding is part of a $3.4 million national initiative to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving large trucks and buses.
The grants will help more Iowans train for stable, well-paying jobs in trucking. Military personnel and their families will receive extra support in entering the industry. The expanded programs aim to meet rising demand while enhancing road safety across the state.
