Indonesia's Nickel Dominance Reshapes Global Markets as U.S. Projects Gain Momentum

The global nickel market is undergoing a major transformation, with Indonesia now controlling over half of worldwide production. This shift follows a strict export ban on raw nickel ore in 2020, which pushed the country to expand domestic processing. Meanwhile, rising prices and supply concerns are drawing attention to new projects, including Alaska Energy Metals Corporation's (AEMC) Nikolai Nickel Project in the United States. Indonesia's dominance in nickel production grew rapidly after January 2020, when the government enforced a ban on raw nickel ore exports. The policy forced companies to process ore locally, triggering a wave of smelter investments. By 2025, the country's share of global production had surged from around 20% to over 50%, with output climbing from 760,000 tons in 2020 to roughly 1.8 million tons. Additional measures, such as downstreaming policies under President Joko Widodo and a 2023 bauxite export ban, further strengthened Indonesia's position.

The market's sensitivity to these changes became clear in early 2026, when nickel prices jumped about 18% in a single month. Analysts now warn that without further investment—estimated at around $66 billion—global supply shortages could emerge later this decade.

In response to growing demand, AEMC is advancing its Nikolai Nickel Project in Alaska, one of the largest undeveloped nickel resources in the U.S. The site contains not just nickel but also copper, cobalt, chromium, platinum, palladium, and iron. To fund progress, the company secured $1 million in a private placement in October 2025, aiming for a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) in 2026. AEMC has also partnered with RecycLiCo Battery Materials to test refining metals from Nikolai ore using hydrometallurgical technology.

U.S. policy support for critical minerals, accelerated during the Trump administration, continues to shape today's strategy. This backing provides a tailwind for domestic projects like Nikolai, as the country seeks to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains. Indonesia's production surge and recent price spikes highlight nickel's volatile yet pivotal role in global markets. AEMC's progress at the Nikolai Nickel Project, alongside U.S. policy support, positions it as a key player in securing future supply. The company's upcoming PEA in 2026 could mark a significant step in developing one of America's largest untapped nickel resources.
