India's ED cracks down on bank fraud with record asset recoveries
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has cracked down on major financial crimes, securing convictions and recovering vast sums. Over the past few years, investigations into bank frauds have led to arrests, asset seizures, and restitution to public sector banks.
The agency's efforts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) have targeted high-value offenders, including those evading justice from abroad. The ED has probed 1,105 bank fraud cases under the PMLA. These investigations resulted in 150 arrests and the filing of 277 prosecution complaints. Three individuals have already been convicted in these cases.
Assets worth Rs 64,920 crore were attached during the probes. Out of this, Rs 15,186 crore were confiscated, with nearly the entire amount—Rs 15,183 crore—returned to public sector banks. The agency also took action under the FEOA, confiscating Rs 725 crore linked to the PMC Bank fraud. An additional Rs 104 crore was recovered in the same case.
The FEOA, introduced in 2018, targets offenders involved in crimes exceeding Rs 100 crore who flee the country. So far, eight individuals have been declared Fugitive Economic Offenders. Notable cases include Nirav Modi, currently in London, and Mehul Choksi, facing extradition from Belgium. Proceedings are also underway against Nirav Modi's brothers, Neeshal and Nehal Modi, linked to activities in Dubai. The ED's actions have led to significant asset recoveries and legal consequences for financial offenders. With ongoing extradition efforts and high-value confiscations, the agency continues to pursue those evading Indian law. The restitution of funds to public sector banks marks a direct impact on recovering lost resources.
