Imperial Oil fined $120K after massive 5.2M-litre wastewater spill in Alberta

Imperial Oil has been fined $120,000 for a wastewater spill at its Kearl oilsands mine near Fort McMurray, Alberta. The incident occurred in 2023 and involved a significant overflow from a containment pond. The company has since expressed regret and taken steps to prevent further spills. The spill released an estimated 5.2 million litres of wastewater. It froze just outside the company’s lease area and did not reach any other water bodies. Imperial Oil has already spent about $2 million on remediation efforts in the affected area.

The company previously faced a $50,000 fine for a separate wastewater spill at the same site in 2022. For the 2023 incident, it agreed to plead guilty to one charge, leading to the withdrawal of the others. Most of the new penalty will fund projects to benefit Alberta’s public lands, Indigenous territories, wetlands, or surrounding ecosystems. The fine will primarily support environmental initiatives. Imperial Oil has committed to improving its operations to avoid future incidents. The remediation work and financial penalty reflect the seriousness of the spill’s impact.
