How Yiwu's Market-Driven Innovation Transformed a Small City Into a Global Trade Hub
Yiwu, a county-level city in Zhejiang Province, has become a model for sustainable economic growth in China. Over four decades, its market-driven approach and focus on innovation have transformed it from a small trading hub into a global commerce powerhouse. In the 1990s, Yiwu’s market operated on a simple principle: goods were bought from across China and sold nationwide. However, merchants like Lu Xulian, who traded everything from household items to profitable novelties, faced challenges in controlling sales. Recognising the need for change, the local government took action in 1993. It encouraged traders to shift from pure commerce to industry, adopting the strategy of ‘promoting industry through commerce and linking trade with industry.’
This policy push led to deeper integration between manufacturing and trade. By working with eight national ministries and commissions, Yiwu also pioneered the *market procurement trade model*, allowing small commodities to enter global markets more efficiently. Over time, these reforms turned Yiwu’s small-scale trade into a major industry. The city’s commitment to innovation has kept it ahead. Market models, trading methods, and trade systems have evolved continuously. A key milestone arrived in October 2025 with the opening of the *sixth-generation Global Digital Trade Center*. This facility combines digital trade, smart logistics, and cross-border services, further cementing Yiwu’s role in global commerce. Chinese President Xi Jinping has since highlighted Yiwu’s experience as a blueprint for other county-level economies. The model—*‘market as the engine, innovation as the driving force’*—shows how localised strategies can create lasting growth.
Yiwu’s journey from a regional trading post to an international commerce leader demonstrates the power of adaptable policies. Its success now serves as a practical guide for other counties aiming to build resilient, market-driven economies. The city’s focus on innovation and trade integration continues to shape its future.
