Power Outage: Why Your Solar Panel System Might Not Help - And How You Can Change That

How solar panels and EVs are becoming lifelines during blackouts

Solar panels and electric vehicles are increasingly being used as backup power sources during outages. However, not all systems work automatically, and some require extra equipment. A recent pilot project in Austria demonstrated how electric cars can even keep critical infrastructure running when the grid fails. Many balcony power plants can supply emergency power, but only if fitted with the right inverter. Some models include an emergency power function, though they may not handle uneven loads well. For reliable backup, the inverter must generate its own 50-hertz frequency—something that works best when paired with battery storage.

To use solar power safely during an outage, the home must disconnect from the public grid. This requires a professionally installed transfer switch. Some balcony power plant batteries already come with an emergency outlet, allowing continuous use of essential devices. Electric vehicles with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) or vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology offer another solution. In Austria, a test showed how an EV could power a cell tower for days when the grid was down. This approach could become more common as compatible cars and charging systems spread.

Backup power from solar panels or electric vehicles depends on the right equipment and setup. Inverters with emergency functions, battery storage, and transfer switches all play a role. As technology improves, these systems may provide more reliable power during prolonged outages.
