Ho Chi Minh City's metro line thrives with 20.5 million riders in 2025
Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line has seen rapid growth since launching in December 2024. The 20 km route, stretching from the city centre to eastern districts, cost over VNĐ43.7 trillion to build and now serves millions of passengers each year. The metro line began commercial operations in late 2024 under a state-owned company managed by the HCM City People’s Committee. Its 14 stations quickly became a key transport link, carrying over 20.5 million passengers in 2025 alone. The system ran more than 80,000 train services that year, generating VNĐ547 billion (US$21.5 million) in revenue—a 50-fold increase from 2024.
Fares range from VNĐ6,000 to VNĐ20,000 per trip, with discounts for students and unlimited pass options available. By May 2026, the line had already completed 34,719 trips and served over 8.86 million passengers. The operator also reported an after-tax profit of nearly VNĐ39 billion (US$1.5 million) in 2025. In late April 2026, Đồng Nai authorities proposed extending the route by 41 km to connect with Long Thành International Airport. The expansion would further integrate the metro with regional transport networks.
The metro line has become a financial success, with strong passenger numbers and rising profits. If the proposed extension moves forward, it could link the city more directly to a major international airport. The project’s early performance suggests growing demand for urban rail transport in the region.
