Fresh-up for historic cable car in Augustusburg - Historic Augustusburg Cable Car Closes for Three-Week Overhaul Until March 27

The historic Augustusburg cable car is undergoing a three-week overhaul until March 27. This annual maintenance ensures the 115-year-old system remains safe and reliable for visitors. Last year alone, nearly 80,000 passengers used the service to reach Augustusburg Castle.

The cable car has been in operation since 1911, transporting visitors from Erdmannsdorf up to the castle. Covering over 1.2 kilometres, it climbs 168 metres in just eight minutes. Two cabins, pulled by a steel cable, carry passengers along the scenic route.

This year's overhaul includes a full inspection of the entire system. Technicians will replace worn track supports and pulleys, service the chassis, and maintain the control systems. The cabins will also be prepared for spring operations. In addition, a mandatory TÜV safety inspection will take place during the maintenance period.

The cable car was last closed in September 2023 for routine checks. Before that, it averaged around 50,000 passengers annually. After this year's work, regular service is scheduled to restart on March 28.

The maintenance ensures the cable car meets safety standards and continues running smoothly. Once reopened, it will once again provide a key link for tourists visiting Augustusburg Castle. The overhaul keeps one of Germany's oldest cable cars in operation for another year.
