Harz Railway's level crossing upgrade disrupts services until Wednesday

The Harz Narrow-Gauge Railways (HSB) has begun renovating a level crossing between Eisfelder Talmühle and Drei Annen Hohne. The work involves replacing both the tracks and the road surface, with construction expected to last until Wednesday. Services on the Harz Query Line will be disrupted during this period. The HSB is using track support slabs for the replacement, a technique similar to model railway construction. This method ensures durability, as the slabs can last up to 70 years. The project is part of ongoing maintenance for Germany's longest continuous narrow-gauge network, covering around 140 kilometres.

While the work continues, train services on the affected section of the Harz Query Line have been suspended. Passengers are being transported via bus shuttles instead. The construction is also affecting road traffic, with the B242 closed near Sorge and a detour in operation. The HSB network includes three key routes: the Brocken Railway, the Harz Query Line, and the Selke Valley Railway. This upgrade aims to improve reliability and safety for both rail and road users in the region.

The level crossing renovation will conclude by midweek, allowing normal train and road services to resume. Until then, passengers and drivers must follow the temporary arrangements. The long-lasting track support slabs will reduce the need for frequent repairs in the future.
