Hanover-Hamburg rail delays extend until mid-June due to construction setbacks
Rail passengers travelling between Hanover and Hamburg will face ongoing disruptions due to delayed construction work. The planned upgrades on the Hamburg-Berlin route have been pushed back, affecting services until mid-June. Alternative transport arrangements are now being introduced in phases.
The original construction timeline was set to finish by April 30, but winter frost caused delays. Partial reopening is now expected on May 15, 2026, with full completion pushed to June 14. Until then, commuters will experience cancellations and adjusted timetables.
From May 1, a phased service will replace regular regional trains. The hourly connection between Hamburg and Lüneburg will still run, stopping at Winsen (Luhe) and Hamburg-Harburg. However, extra peak-hour services between Lüneburg and Hamburg will remain suspended until June 13. Replacement buses will mostly operate as planned between Lüneburg, Uelzen, Celle, and Langenhagen, though minor changes may still occur. A two-hourly shuttle between Lüneburg and Uelzen may be introduced, but it won't offer direct links to Hamburg. Additional trips between Hamburg and Uelzen, via Lüneburg, are being added as an alternative. In Lower Saxony, further disruptions will affect the Hannover–Celle route from May 1 and the Hannover–Lüneburg line from June 14. Alternative timetables for regional services won't be available until after Easter, leaving passengers with limited options for now. A regional train between Winsen and Hamburg will run hourly, serving all stations along the route. Despite these adjustments, commuters should prepare for additional cancellations until mid-June.
The delays mean rail users must rely on replacement buses and reduced services for several more weeks. Full service resumes on June 14, but until then, passengers are advised to check updated schedules before travelling. The adjustments aim to ease disruption while construction work continues.
