Reeperbahn gets permanent bike and bus lanes - Hamburg's Reeperbahn makes bike and bus lanes permanent after trial success

Hamburg's Reeperbahn will now permanently keep its dedicated bike and bus lanes in both directions. The decision follows a successful two-year trial that ran from 2023 to 2024. Officials confirmed the changes after reviewing traffic data and safety reports.

The trial period began in 2023, testing separate lanes for bicycles and buses along the busy street. During this time, the number of cyclists grew far more than expected. Observations by Hamburg's roads authority also found that conflicts between drivers, cyclists, and bus passengers stayed rare.

Travel time measurements and accident analyses showed another key result: motor vehicle traffic faced no major delays. The findings convinced city planners to make the lanes a permanent feature. Construction for a new outbound bike and bus lane will start on 2 March.

The existing infrastructure has already proven its worth. Cyclists have adopted the lanes quickly, while buses maintain reliable schedules. With the expansion, the city aims to build on these improvements.

The permanent lanes will solidify the Reeperbahn's role as a key route for cyclists and public transport. Construction begins in early March, adding another lane for outbound traffic. The changes reflect the trial's success in boosting cycling without causing major disruptions for other road users.
