Hamburg's key rail link shuts down for six weeks of major upgrades

Deutsche Bahn will shut down a key rail link in Hamburg for over a month this summer. The Verbindungsbahn route between Hamburg Central Station and Altona will close from July 14 to August 20. The disruption will impact both long-distance trains and local S-Bahn services across the city. The closure will stop all trains running between Hamburg Central Station and Altona. Direct services linking Berlin and Hamburg will also be suspended during this period. Passengers should prepare for diversions, cancellations, and altered timetables.

During the shutdown, Deutsche Bahn will carry out major upgrades. Three rail bridges will be renewed, and essential groundwork will begin for the relocation of Altona Station. The new station is planned to open by late 2029, around two kilometres north of its current site, near the Diebsteich S-Bahn stop. The city’s S-Bahn system will face its own disruptions. From July 17 to August 13, lines S2, S5, and S7 will replace trains with buses between Altona and Sternschanze. Once complete, the existing Altona terminal will become a through station, connecting to the new facility.

The six-week closure aims to modernise Hamburg’s rail infrastructure and prepare for the new Altona Station. Commuters and long-distance travellers will need to adjust to temporary changes. Deutsche Bahn has advised passengers to check updated schedules before travelling.
