Greece's Bold 2025 Transport Overhaul: Electric Buses, Cleaner Roads, and Faster Travel
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Alexis Vafeades, has unveiled a series of policy initiatives set to transform the country's transport network by 2025. The plans focus on upgrading infrastructure, speeding up travel, and promoting cleaner mobility across roads, airports, and seaports.
Key priorities include expanding electric vehicle use, improving public transport, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions while boosting road safety.
The government's strategy rests on three main pillars: faster transportation, cleaner mobility, and better infrastructure. A major push will see €21.5 million allocated to introduce 2,500 electric buses by 2025. This move aims to reduce emissions and modernise public transport.
To encourage electric vehicle adoption, the Transport Department is developing an incentive scheme running until 2030. The Minister stressed the importance of financial support to make electric cars more affordable for the public. Road safety remains a critical focus, with Vafeades noting a decline in accidents over the past two years. The new policies also target further reductions in greenhouse gases from transport, aligning economic growth with environmental goals. Airports, seaports, and other transport hubs will receive significant upgrades under the plan. The government expects these investments to create jobs, improve connectivity, and strengthen the country's infrastructure network.
The 2025 transport policy will roll out measures to expand electromobility, enhance public transport, and upgrade key infrastructure. With a budget of €21.5 million for electric buses and ongoing support for cleaner vehicles, the government aims to cut emissions and improve travel efficiency. The changes are set to take effect within the next year.
