Lahn-Kinzig Railway: Restrictions Due to Construction Work - Gießen-Nidda Railway Faces Months of Closures for Major Upgrades

Major upgrades are coming to the Gießen-Nidda railway line, but travellers will face months of disruption. Deutsche Bahn has announced a full closure of the route from late June until mid-December 2026. Replacement buses will cover the affected sections while work takes place.

The first phase of disruptions begins earlier, on March 1, when trains between Gießen and Hungen on the Lahn-Kinzig Railway will stop running. This initial closure is due to construction work along the line.

A further halt is scheduled from May 9 to May 23, affecting services between Nidda and Gelnhausen. During this period, tracks will be renewed, causing a temporary suspension of train operations.

The main closure starts in late June, with the entire Gießen-Nidda route shutting down until mid-December. Deutsche Bahn will provide replacement buses for key connections, including Watzenborn-Steinberg to Garbenteich, Lich, Langsdorf, Hungen, Trais-Horloff, and Ober-Widdersheim. Another route will link Watzenborn-Steinberg to Lich, Hungen, Borsdorf, and Nidda.

The upgrades include installing five new electronic signal boxes, allowing drivers to control switches and signals with a mouse click. Twelve level crossings will be completely rebuilt, while ten others will receive modernised safety systems.

Passengers are advised to plan ahead, as no trains will operate on the closed sections during these periods.

The improvements aim to modernise the railway's infrastructure, including signalling and crossing safety. Travellers should expect delays and use the replacement bus services until the line reopens in mid-December 2026. Deutsche Bahn has not yet announced further details on potential timetable adjustments beyond the closure dates.
