Energy experts from SPD and Greens criticize Reich's bill plans - Germany's solar energy reforms spark coalition infighting and climate backlash
Federal Economics Minister Katharina Reiche is facing sharp criticism over her proposed reforms to solar energy and power grid regulations. Members of the SPD and Greens have condemned the plans, arguing they threaten Germany's shift to renewable power. The dispute has deepened divisions within the coalition, with no official response yet from the Bundesregierung.
SPD energy expert Nina Scheer has labelled Reiche's proposals as 'completely heading in the wrong direction.' She warned that cutting subsidies for small solar installations, such as rooftop panels, would 'strangle' these energy sources at a critical time. Scheer also accused Reiche of undermining the nuclear phase-out by failing to prioritise better use of renewables instead.
Scheer insisted that the reforms would 'cement our dependence' on fossil fuels rather than accelerate the transition to clean energy. She called for a 'fundamental revision' of the plans to bring them in line with the coalition's climate goals. Her criticism was echoed by Green Party energy spokesman Michael Kellner, who demanded a 'declaration of independence from fossil oil and gas.'
As of February 2026, the Ampelkoalition has not put forward alternative proposals. While both Scheer and Greens co-leader Katharina Dröge have attacked the draft EEG law for stalling solar expansion, no concrete countermeasures have been publicly outlined. The Bundesregierung remains silent on the growing backlash.
The row over Reiche's reforms highlights ongoing tensions in the coalition over energy policy. Without adjustments, the proposed changes risk slowing Germany's renewable expansion. The government's next steps will determine whether the dispute leads to revised legislation or prolonged deadlock.
