From the Imperial Palace to High-Tech Robots: Merz Concludes China Trip - Germany's Merz secures major China deals in trade and tech diplomacy push
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has concluded a high-profile visit to China, focusing on trade, technology, and diplomacy. During his trip, he secured a major aircraft deal, explored robotics advancements, and held key meetings with Chinese leaders.
Merz began his visit in Beijing, where he toured the Forbidden City with Dominic Hosner of the German Archaeological Institute. He left his mark in the guestbook, writing a personal note alongside lines from Schiller's poetry.
Later, he met Chinese Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and agreed to hold government consultations before the end of the year. Merz also urged Beijing to use its influence over Moscow to help end Russia's war in Ukraine.
On the economic front, Merz announced a significant order for up to 120 Airbus aircraft from China. The deal marks a boost for the European manufacturer. He also visited a Siemens Energy plant in Hangzhou, where a joint venture produces high-voltage circuit breakers.
Technology played a key role in the trip. At Unitree, a Chinese robotics firm, Merz watched humanoid robots perform kung fu and demonstrate practical tasks. These included kitchen chores, laundry collection, and industrial inspections using four-legged models. While no official figures exist, German investment in Chinese robotics and AI has grown in recent years.
At Mercedes-Benz's Beijing office, Merz test-drove a near-fully autonomous S-Class model. The visit highlighted Germany's interest in cutting-edge automotive innovation.
Throughout the talks, Germany pushed for fairer market access for its companies in China and addressed concerns over the trade deficit.
The visit resulted in concrete agreements, including the Airbus deal and plans for further government discussions. Merz's engagements in robotics, energy, and automotive sectors underscore Germany's focus on technology and trade in its relations with China. The call for Beijing's role in resolving the Ukraine conflict remains a key diplomatic priority.
