Comparison Portal: Gas Prices for New Customers at Lowest Level Since 20 Months - Germany's energy prices split as electricity drops but gas risks rise

Energy costs in Germany have shifted again, with electricity and gas prices showing mixed trends. The cheapest news deal now stands at around 24 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while gas prices for new customers have dropped to their lowest since May 2024. However, wholesale gas prices have recently climbed, raising concerns about future bills.

As of January 9, 2026, the most affordable electricity tariff comes from immergrün! with its Spar Smart FairMax offer. In Mönchengladbach, a household using 4,000 kWh would pay 961.55 Euro in the first year—about 24 ct/kWh. This represents a saving of up to 885 Euro compared to the default local supply. A year earlier, new customers were paying roughly 10 ct/kWh more, around 20 percent higher than today's news.

Gas prices, meanwhile, have seen a recent decline for new customers. The cheapest current offers average around 8 ct/kWh, down by about 2 ct/kWh since January 2025. For a household consuming 20,000 kWh annually, this translates to heating costs of roughly 1,600 Euro. Yet default local supply tariffs remain high, averaging 13.5 ct/kWh, pushing yearly bills to around 2,700 Euro. Behind these changes, wholesale gas prices have begun to rise. Short-term rates now exceed 4 ct/kWh, up from about 3 ct/kWh in December. Low gas storage levels and forecasts of cold weather have contributed to the increase. However, private households may not see these fluctuations reflected in their bills for up to a year. To avoid future hikes, experts recommend choosing a new gas tariff with at least a 12-month price guarantee.

Electricity prices have fallen for new customers, with the best deals now around 24 ct/kWh. Gas costs, while currently lower for new contracts, could rise if wholesale prices stay high. Households looking to secure stable rates may benefit from fixed-term tariffs before any further increases take effect.
