Germany's electricity prices drop—but gas bills may still climb soon

Electricity prices in Germany have started to fall, bringing some relief to households. However, gas bills may still rise in the coming months, according to warnings from the Federal Network Agency. The agency’s head, Klaus Müller, has also called on consumers to reduce their gas usage where possible. The drop in electricity costs is partly due to a surge in cheaper renewable energy. Yet, at times, supply has outstripped demand, leading to negative prices. Müller has not dismissed the idea of regulatory steps to address this issue, such as expanding storage options or shifting from fixed feed-in tariffs to direct market sales.

For gas, most private households currently benefit from price guarantees lasting a year or more. But Müller has cautioned that follow-up contracts could bring higher costs. While the agency has not ruled out further increases, it continues to monitor the situation closely.

Consumers may see lower electricity bills for now, but gas expenses remain uncertain. The Federal Network Agency is exploring ways to stabilise energy markets, though no immediate changes have been confirmed. Households are advised to prepare for potential price shifts in future gas contracts.
