Germany's Construction Sector Faces a Sustainability Reckoning in New Report

A new report on sustainability in Germany's construction sector will launch in March. Titled Sustainability in Germany's Building Sector, it examines the industry's progress in resource conservation and climate protection. The findings aim to highlight untapped opportunities for sustainable building practices.

The report is a joint effort by the Building Forum for Climate Neutrality and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy. It will assess how far Germany's construction industry has come in adopting circular economy principles. An online event will follow, bringing together planners, architects, developers, and other industry professionals to discuss key strategies for improvement.

One company already leading by example is the VEKA Group. With over 30 years of experience in PVC recycling, it recently earned ISCC PLUS certification at its Sendenhorst headquarters in July 2024. This certification ensures full traceability of recycled materials, reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainable practices.

The event will focus on practical steps to accelerate sustainability in construction. While the report will provide a snapshot of current efforts, broader data on Germany's progress in raw material recovery and sustainable planning over the past five years remains limited.

The report's release will offer a clearer picture of where Germany's construction sector stands in its shift towards a sustainable economy. By identifying gaps and opportunities, it could help shape future policies and industry standards. The online discussion will further explore how professionals can drive meaningful change in sustainable building.
