Germany's Auto Industry Demands Political Push for Zero-Emission Trucks
The German automotive industry has highlighted the need for strong political support to speed up the adoption of zero-emission trucks. At the IAA Media Summit in Frankfurt, leaders discussed the challenges and opportunities in shifting to climate-neutral transport. VDA President Hildegard Müller stated that the technology for low- and zero-emission trucks is already available. Manufacturers believe they are ready for the transition but stress that reliable political frameworks are essential for market success.
Battery-electric and hydrogen-powered drivetrains are seen as critical for heavy-duty applications. Digital services and artificial intelligence will also play a role in supporting these technologies. Many companies continue to favour a technology-neutral approach for the sector’s future.
The industry is calling for an early review of CO₂ standards for heavy-duty vehicles. This would help balance climate targets, competitiveness, and investment security. A key demand is the rapid expansion of charging and hydrogen infrastructure, as uneven development across Europe remains a major obstacle. The VDA and manufacturers urge policymakers to adopt an industrial strategy that encourages investment in electrification, digitalisation, and decarbonisation. Without improved infrastructure and clear regulations, the rollout of zero-emission trucks will face significant delays.
