Nationwide strikes in local public transport on Monday - Germany Braces for Massive Transport Strikes on February 2, 2026

Public transport across Germany will face major disruptions on Monday, February 2, 2026. The Verdi union has called for nationwide strikes, targeting nearly 100,000 workers at 150 municipal transit and bus companies. The action aims to increase pressure in ongoing wage negotiations with employers.

The strike is set to bring services to a near standstill in many regions. Verdi officials warned that transport in affected areas would 'grind to a halt' for the day. While no full list of impacted companies exists, confirmed locations include cities in Hessen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Sachsen, and Brandenburg.

In Hessen, disruptions will hit Frankfurt, Kassel, Wiesbaden, Gießen, and Marburg. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will see stoppages at firms like Verkehrsgesellschaft Ludwigslust-Parchim, Nahbus Nordwestmecklenburg, and multiple Rostock-based operators. Schleswig-Holstein's affected services include Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft, Stadtwerke Lübeck Mobil, and Aktiv Bus Flensburg.

Rheinland-Pfalz will experience delays in cities such as Mainz, Pirmasens, and Trier, while Sachsen's Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig, and Zwickau networks will also be impacted. Brandenburg's ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam is among the companies facing walkouts.

The strikes come as Verdi pushes for better pay and working conditions. Negotiations have so far failed to reach an agreement, prompting the union to escalate its action.

The strikes will disrupt travel for millions of commuters on Monday. With no resolution in sight, further industrial action remains possible. Employers and Verdi have yet to announce a new round of talks.
