Germany and Canada Agree on Closer Cooperation in the Automotive Industry - Germany and Canada unite to accelerate green automotive innovation
Germany and Canada have signed a new agreement to boost cooperation in the automotive industry. The deal, announced today, focuses on battery and hydrogen technology as well as zero-emission vehicles. Both countries aim to tackle geopolitical challenges while strengthening their economic ties.
The declaration of intent was signed in Berlin by Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche and her Canadian counterpart, Mélanie Joly. It outlines plans to develop the automotive sector, increase bilateral trade, and speed up the shift to low-emission transport.
A new Joint Automotive and Mobility Cooperation Group will oversee the partnership. The group's tasks include diversifying supply chains, stabilising industrial production, and accelerating the adoption of cleaner vehicles. The move comes as Canada looks to reduce its reliance on the U.S. market, following years of unpredictable trade policies under former President Trump.
The agreement does not reference any prior automotive collaboration between the two nations. Instead, it marks the first formal step in their joint efforts to modernise the industry and secure future trade stability.
The partnership will focus on practical steps to strengthen supply chains and promote green mobility. By working together, Germany and Canada intend to create a more resilient automotive sector. The next phase will involve setting up the cooperation group and launching specific projects under the agreement.
