German police seize weapons and €12,000 in cash during border stop

Federal police have seized a cache of weapons and hazardous items during a routine border check on the A12 motorway. The discovery involved three men travelling in a Berlin-registered car, one of whom was already known to authorities. Officers also found €12,000 in cash during the search.

The incident took place as part of Germany's extended temporary border controls with Poland, now set to run until at least mid-September 2026. Originally due to end in mid-March, the measures were prolonged due to concerns over irregular migration, the Ukraine war, and conflicts in the Middle East. Checks are carried out by federal police, supported by customs officers, both at border points and up to 30 kilometres inland.

During the stop, officers searched the vehicle and uncovered a sword, a machete, three knives, a baton, a flare gun, two animal repellent sprays, and a knuckle duster. The car, registered in Berlin, contained three passengers aged 20, 21, and 35. The 21-year-old, already known to police, was carrying the €12,000 in cash.

All items were confiscated as evidence, and investigations into potential violations of weapons laws have been launched against the trio. The border controls, which have caused long delays—particularly on weekends—also include stricter customs checks on 'tank tourists' exploiting fuel price differences. Poland has similarly extended its own controls until early April 2026, with further extensions likely.

The seized weapons and cash remain under investigation, with authorities examining possible legal breaches. Germany's extended border measures, including fuel restrictions and heightened checks, will continue affecting crossings for the foreseeable future. Police have not yet released further details on the ongoing inquiry.
