Gazprom Turns Waste Gas Into Fuel at Chayandinskoye Field

Gazprom Dobycha Noyabrsk, a subsidiary of Gazprom, has introduced a new method to repurpose retentate gas at the Chayandinskoye field in Yakutia. The innovation turns waste gas into fuel for compressor units, improving efficiency and cutting waste. This development supports Gazprom’s Eastern Gas Program, one of its most strategic projects. The Chayandinskoye field produces natural gas containing inert gases like helium and nitrogen. These are separated using membrane technology, leaving behind retentate—a byproduct with low calorific value. Though less energy-rich, this gas still contains over 85% methane, making it viable as fuel.

Previously, the retentate affected the quality of gas fed into the main pipeline. Now, two new tie-ins direct it to the compressor units of the central booster station and the interstage compressor station. This change reduces inert gas levels in the pipeline supply, ensuring the natural gas meets required quality standards.

The project also boosts energy efficiency and conserves resources. By reusing retentate, the company cuts waste and lowers operational costs. Gazprom Dobycha Noyabrsk, which employs over 5,000 people across 23 licensed sites in four Russian regions, specialises in extracting and preparing gas and condensate for transport. The patented system transforms a low-value byproduct into useful fuel, strengthening the field’s sustainability. It also maintains the quality of gas supplied to the pipeline while reducing waste. This approach aligns with Gazprom’s broader goals in energy efficiency and resource management.
