Soldier Accidentally Reveals Position of France's Aircraft Carrier via Jogging App - French sailor's Strava fitness app leaks Charles de Gaulle carrier location

A French naval sailor has accidentally exposed the location of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier through a fitness app. The incident occurred in March when his real-time movements were tracked via Strava, a popular exercise platform. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the security breach.

On March 13, the sailor's public Strava profile displayed his activity aboard the moving carrier in the Mediterranean, northwest of Cyprus. The data revealed the vessel's precise location, raising concerns over operational security. The French Armed Forces General Staff confirmed that such behaviour violated current regulations and warned of disciplinary action if the report was verified.

This is not the first time fitness apps have posed security risks. In 2025, a case emerged involving Martindale, who spied for Russia by sharing Ukrainian military positions on Telegram. He also exploited Strava jogging routes to transmit strategic targets. Despite repeated briefings on mobile device risks, military personnel continue to face challenges in maintaining digital security.

The incident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in military operational security. French defence officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to protocols regarding personal device usage. Further measures may be introduced to prevent similar breaches in the future.
