Controversial Gap Filler: Construction of Riederwald Tunnel Begins - Frankfurt's Riederwald Tunnel breaks ground after decades of delays

Construction has officially started on Frankfurt's Riederwald Tunnel, a major urban highway project decades in the making. The 1.1-kilometre tunnel will link the A66 and A661 motorways on the city's eastern edge, cutting through a 2.2-kilometre gap beneath the Riederwald district.

The project, led by Autobahn GmbH, carries a €1.5 billion budget and is set for completion by 2033. It marks the largest urban highway scheme undertaken by the company in Hesse. Legal and political approvals have been secured, though the plan has faced long-standing opposition.

Environmental concerns have played a central role in delays, particularly risks to protected species like the Heldbock beetle. Critics argue the tunnel could increase traffic into Frankfurt, while supporters claim it will ease congestion for local residents. The tunnel's route runs underneath Riederwald, a residential area where traffic bottlenecks have been a persistent issue. Once finished, it will form a direct connection between two key motorways, altering travel patterns in the region.

The Riederwald Tunnel is now under construction after years of disputes and planning. Its completion in 2033 will reshape transport links on Frankfurt's eastern side. The project's environmental and traffic impacts will remain under close watch as work progresses.
