Frankfurt's city council has given the green light to a major expansion of train-based public transport. The newly approved 'Comprehensive Train Transport Plan 2035+' outlines a series of ambitious projects aimed at improving connections across the city. Officials describe the plan as a foundation for future political decisions on transport infrastructure.

The plan was developed under the guidance of Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert of the Green Party. It initially included 56 proposed measures, but only 23 have been selected for further development. These projects focus on key areas, such as better integrating the eastern district of Bergen-Enkheim and enhancing the northern district of Eckenheim.

One of the most significant proposals involves extending the underground metro beyond Südbahnhof station to Sachsenhäuser Warte. Part of this new route could run above ground, marking a shift from the city's usual underground system. The plan also includes evaluating multi-million-euro upgrades to the metro network, though specific costs have yet to be finalised.

A new tram bridge across the Main River is another highlight of the strategy. Alongside this, the tram network itself would see broader expansion, increasing connectivity for residents. The city council's approval followed earlier endorsements from Frankfurt's executive board and transport committee, making the decision largely procedural.

Siefert emphasised that the plan serves as a framework for future investment. It will guide politicians as they decide which projects to prioritise in the coming years.

The approved plan sets out a clear direction for Frankfurt's transport future. With 23 projects now under consideration, the city aims to strengthen its train network and improve access for outlying districts. The next steps will involve detailed evaluations of costs and feasibility before any construction begins.
