Record in Plant and Food Controls at the Airport - Frankfurt Airport's tiny team breaks records inspecting 32,898 plant shipments in 2022
Frankfurt Airport's border inspection post has set new records in 2022, handling a surge in plant, fruit, and vegetable imports. The facility, the largest of its kind in Germany, processed over 32,898 consignments—a 36% rise from the previous year. Daily operations involved checking shipments from 89 non-EU countries, with flowers, mangoes, and strawberries among the most inspected goods.
The inspection team, made up of just 16 staff, worked in rotating shifts to manage high demand, particularly around Valentine's Day and Christmas. In 2022 alone, they examined 230 million roses and 19 million more in the two weeks before Valentine's Day 2023. Another 16.7 million poinsettias were checked ahead of the festive season.
Shipments arrived from at least six non-EU countries, including Kenya, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Colombia. Roses made up a large portion, but the team also inspected 5,450 tons of mangoes and 2,430 tons of strawberries. On average, 90 consignments passed through the post each day.
Revenue from fee-based plant inspections climbed by 16% in 2022, surpassing €1.25 million. The facility's workload far exceeded that of other German inspection sites, such as Hamburg Port or Leipzig Airport.
The record-breaking year highlights Frankfurt Airport's role as a key entry point for perishable goods into the EU. With rising shipment volumes and increased revenue, the inspection post continues to expand its operations. The team's round-the-clock work ensures compliance while supporting the growing trade in flowers, fruit, and vegetables.
