Hundreds of Extras Test Operations at New Airport Terminal - Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 3 prepares for April 22 debut with massive testing
Frankfurt Airport's new Terminal 3 is set to open on April 22, with its first flights departing the following day. The facility, designed to handle up to 19 million passengers a year, has entered the final phase of operational testing before launch.
Trials began earlier this month, with more than 200 volunteers testing key processes on Tuesday. These included immigration, check-in, and passport controls. Testing sessions now take place every Tuesday and Thursday, covering everything from baggage drop-off to boarding.
Over 8,000 extras and employees—ranging from tech-savvy participants to older travellers—will take part by the opening date. Airlines, airport operator Fraport, federal police, and service providers are all involved in refining the new systems. Airlines from alliances such as British Airways, Air France-KLM, Etihad, and Emirates will move to Terminal 3 in four phases by summer. Meanwhile, Star Alliance members led by Lufthansa will stay in Terminal 1.
Terminal 3's launch marks a major expansion for Frankfurt Airport. The phased relocation of carriers will continue through the summer, with the new facility expected to ease congestion and improve passenger flow. The first flights are scheduled to depart on April 23.
