A flexible transport scheme in the Braunschweig region is making public transport more accessible. Known as Flexo, the service connects smaller communities to bus stops and train stations. It also offers cheaper on-demand taxis during off-peak times and weekends.
The Flexo system launched in 2021 to bridge gaps in rural transport. Residents now find stops within 300 metres of their homes, cutting down walking distances. Fares follow the same pricing as the Braunschweig Regional Transport Association (VRB), keeping costs predictable.
For areas with lower demand, on-demand route taxis (ALT) and shared on-call taxis (AST) provide an affordable alternative. These services match regular bus fares, making them cheaper than standard taxis. They operate outside peak hours and on weekends, ensuring transport remains available when buses run less frequently. Passengers must book these shuttles or shared taxis at least 45 minutes ahead. The system aims to keep rural areas connected without relying on fixed schedules.
Flexo and its on-demand options give residents more ways to travel at lower costs. By extending public transport reach, the scheme helps smaller communities stay linked to the wider network. Booking requirements and off-peak operations ensure the service remains efficient and sustainable.
