Five New Long-Haul Routes Approved from Reagan-National Airport

The Department of Transportation has approved five new long-haul routes from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). This decision is notable as long-haul flights from DCA are uncommon, offering passengers more options. The move has already drawn criticism from some airlines. The approved routes will connect DCA to Las Vegas (LAS), San Antonio (SAT), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), and Seattle (SEA). Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, and United were each granted permission to operate one flight beyond the airport’s usual short-haul limits.

The Department of Transportation rejected bids from Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and JetBlue. These carriers have since filed formal complaints, arguing the decision undermines competition and fare affordability. Frontier directly challenged Alaska Airlines, while Spirit pointed to the dominant market share of the airlines awarded the routes.

Reagan-National is a highly sought-after airport due to its central location and high passenger traffic. The Department of Transportation will review public comments before finalising the decision by November 8, 2024. The new routes expand travel choices for passengers flying from DCA. Airlines not awarded the exemptions continue to push back against the decision. A final ruling will come after the comment period ends in early November.
