High demand for energy advice - Energy advice demand soars in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern amid rising costs

Demand for energy advice in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has surged in recent years. The Consumer Advice Center of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reported a sharp rise in consultations, with over 25,000 sessions expected by 2025. This increase follows the energy crisis triggered by Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and soaring fuel costs.

In 2020, the centre handled around 5,000 energy-related queries. By 2025, that number had climbed to more than 25,000. The federal BAFA funding programme, expanded support for energy efficiency, and rising prices all contributed to the spike.

Last year alone, the centre conducted 3,565 energy consultations—an increase of over 1,000 since 2021. Top concerns included heating cost statements, renewable energy options, and modern heating systems. Legal issues around electricity and gas contracts also saw high demand, with 505 cases recorded—an average of 14 per working day. Wiebke Cornelius, the centre's managing director, highlighted strong interest in housing and energy advice. Low-income households, in particular, have sought guidance amid financial pressures. The state provided €927,000 in funding last year, reflecting the centre's reliance on both federal and regional support.

The rise in consultations shows ongoing challenges with energy affordability and efficiency. With demand remaining high, the centre continues to play a key role in helping residents navigate rising costs. Government funding remains essential for maintaining these services.
