Emirates slashes plastic waste with bold new cabin sustainability upgrades

Emirates has rolled out a series of sustainable updates across its cabins, cutting plastic waste and boosting recycling efforts. The airline’s latest changes include reusable bedding bags in premium classes and recycled materials in meal service items. These moves form part of a wider push to reduce environmental impact through innovative recycling and eco-friendly products.

The airline has invested over AED 50 million in a closed-loop recycling programme, developed with partner deSter FZE UAE. This initiative collects damaged trays, casseroles, and other serviceware, processing them into new items with up to 25% recycled content. The facility itself operates on solar power and follows strict water conservation and waste reduction measures.

Since June 2023, Emirates has recycled more than 88,000 kilograms of plastic from Economy Class meal items. In First Class, traditional bedding packaging has been swapped for reusable bags made from recycled polyester. Meanwhile, Premium Economy and Economy Class fleece blankets now use recycled polyester equivalent to around 28 plastic bottles per blanket. Other changes include 100% recycled headset packaging across all cabins and the removal of plastic straws, replaced by certified paper alternatives. Children’s toys and bags now contain at least 50% recycled material, with plastic wrapping completely eliminated from these items.

The airline’s sustainability drive covers multiple areas, from recycled serviceware to eco-friendly passenger amenities. With ongoing investments in recycling infrastructure and product redesigns, Emirates continues to expand its efforts to cut waste and improve environmental performance. The partnership with deSter FZE UAE further supports these goals through sustainable supply chain practices.
