Egypt's gold rush accelerates as Abu Marawat mine nears 2026 production

Egypt is pushing to become a key player in the global mining industry. Recent reforms and a more investor-friendly climate have drawn international companies to its mineral-rich regions. One major project, the Abu Marawat gold concession, is now moving from exploration to full-scale production under Aton Resources' leadership.

Over the past five years, Egypt has overhauled its mining laws to attract foreign investment. The 2022 Mining Law introduced tax breaks, cutting corporate rates to between 5% and 25%, and reduced royalties. A one-stop licensing system at the General Authority for Mineral Resources (GAMR) now speeds up approvals, while a 2023 stability agreement locks in fiscal terms for 15 years. These changes, along with $500 million in state-backed infrastructure for the Eastern Desert, have boosted foreign mining investments by 40% since 2021.

Aton Resources is leading the shift at Abu Marawat, where preparations for commercial mining are well underway. The company is evaluating a modular processing plant to kickstart early gold extraction. Meanwhile, a 71-borehole drilling programme aims to clarify deep mineralisation and geological structures. Investors are awaiting updated resource estimates, which will shape the final development plan.

The project's centrepiece, the Hamama West mine, is set to begin gold production in late 2026. Its location in the Eastern Desert offers strong logistical support, with access to a 220-kV power line and a four-lane highway. Environmental and social impact assessments, including biodiversity studies, are also in progress to meet legal requirements.

The Abu Marawat concession marks Egypt's transition from exploration to large-scale gold production. With regulatory reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and investor confidence rising, the country is positioning itself as a competitive mining destination. Commercial output at Hamama West is expected to start in the second half of 2026.
