Passenger water transport is set to return to East Kazakhstan Region, offering a new way to reach the Bukhtarma resort areas. The move aims to cut road traffic and open up scenic routes along the vast Bukhtarma Reservoir. Plans include multi-day trips and cruise ships with overnight facilities. The Bukhtarma Reservoir stretches 500 kilometres in length and spans 40 kilometres at its widest point. Its size makes it ideal for water-based transport and tourism, prompting local authorities to push for revival.

Oleg Belov, director of the Belalex project and a qualified shipmaster, supports the idea of launching cruise ships. These vessels would allow passengers to stay overnight, turning short trips into extended journeys. Such services could ease pressure on congested roads leading to popular resorts. Behind the scenes, talks are ongoing with the Russian Federation. A proposed joint venture would serve as a model for cooperation, helping to speed up development. Passenger transport and water tourism in the region are already gaining momentum, with more routes and services expected soon.

If successful, the project will provide residents and tourists with multi-day waterway trips. Cruise ships and improved transport links could reduce road congestion near Bukhtarma. The initiative also strengthens cross-border collaboration, with Russia playing a key role in its rollout.
