DoorDash has introduced a temporary program to help drivers cope with rising fuel costs. The initiative comes as global oil prices surge due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Drivers in the U.S. and Canada will receive extra payments until April 26.

Global oil prices have climbed sharply since the Iran-Israel conflict began in February 2024. Brent crude oil, which traded at around $70 per barrel before the war, now fluctuates between $90 and $100. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route, have worsened the situation. Iran briefly closed parts of the strait in mid-February 2024, delaying exports to China and other buyers.

The conflict has forced countries to seek alternative supply routes. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have rushed to fill storage, while Kuwait reduced production due to limited capacity. Meanwhile, Iran halted most oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and attacked regional energy facilities after Israel struck an Iranian gas field. These tensions have pushed up shipping costs and insurance premiums in the Persian Gulf.

In response to higher fuel expenses, DoorDash is offering U.S. drivers with its debit card 10% cash back on gas, up from the usual 2%. Over half of the company's drivers already use this card. Those who drive 125 miles or more per week will also get a $15 fuel payment. In Canada, drivers can earn up to CAD 36 weekly, depending on their delivery distance.

This isn't the first time DoorDash has rolled out such support. A similar program launched in 2022 when U.S. gas prices exceeded $4 per gallon. Back then, ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft also added temporary surcharges to offset fuel costs for drivers.

The temporary relief measures will remain in place until April 26. U.S. drivers with the DoorDash debit card will benefit from higher cash-back rates, while those logging long distances will receive weekly payments. Canadian drivers, meanwhile, can claim fuel support based on their mileage during deliveries.
