Dmitry Sadovnikov poised to dominate Yakutsk's mayoral race with United Russia's backing
The race for Yakutsk’s next mayor is taking shape, with Dmitry Sadovnikov emerging as the clear frontrunner. His nomination by United Russia, the dominant party in the city’s Duma, leaves little room for competition. Incumbent Yevgeny Grigoryev remains a formal contender, though his chances appear almost nonexistent.
Dmitry Sadovnikov, currently the First Deputy Chairman of the Yakutia government, was officially nominated by the Presidium of United Russia’s General Council. His candidacy had been anticipated since March, when Yakutia.Info first reported the likely move. Each nominating body can put forward only one candidate, and nominees may accept just one nomination.
The nomination window remains open until June 8. After that, the selection committee will review all submissions from June 8 to 18. A final meeting to confirm the candidates is set for June 19. Despite the process, incumbent mayor Yevgeny Grigoryev could still be put forward as an alternative. However, with United Russia holding a firm majority in the Yakutsk City Duma, his prospects are considered negligible. The Duma will formally elect the new mayor on September 20, 2026.
Sadovnikov’s nomination by United Russia all but guarantees his election, given the party’s control over the Duma. The upcoming sessions will finalise the list of candidates, though no serious challenge to his candidacy is expected. The vote in September will mark the official transition of power.
