DHL Express Launches AI Tool to Automate Customs Descriptions for Global Shippers
DHL Express has introduced an AI-powered image recognition tool for its international shipping service. The new feature allows customers to photograph their items and receive an automated, customs-compliant description. This marks the first large-scale use of such technology in the global express shipping industry.
The system works by analysing photos of shipment items through computer vision. It then generates structured descriptions that meet international customs requirements. According to the company, this replaces the traditional manual process of declaring package contents.
Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express, highlighted the importance of accurate shipment descriptions for customer satisfaction. Dirk Olufs, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer, added that precise data from the start reduces delays, speeds up customs clearance, and minimises follow-up queries. Customers in Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates can already use the feature. No registration is needed—only a smartphone or another camera-equipped device. DHL Express plans to roll out the tool globally in phases throughout 2026.
The AI-driven solution aims to simplify the shipping process by automating content descriptions. It is currently available in eight countries, with further expansion expected next year. The company expects the technology to improve efficiency and reduce errors in customs documentation.
