Dharavi's bold redevelopment plan promises homes, green spaces by 2028

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project has taken a major step forward with a clear timeline and ambitious goals. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the first phase will deliver 10,000 homes and key infrastructure by March 2028. The plan aims to transform Asia’s largest slum while protecting its unique industries and community spirit. The project will follow a model inspired by Singapore and Hong Kong, blending modern urban planning with sustainability. A large nature park, tree transplantation, and green construction methods will form the core of the redesign. Transport links will also see a major upgrade, including India’s first multi-modal hub connecting Western, Central, and Harbour railway lines, multiple Metro corridors, and potential future links to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train.

Efforts to safeguard Dharavi’s traditional industries—such as leather, textiles, recycling, pottery, and food processing—will be central to the redevelopment. A dedicated MSME policy is being drafted to support these sectors and create jobs. While commercial development is part of the plan, officials have stressed that public welfare remains the top priority. The first phase of the project is set to complete by 2028, offering new homes and improved infrastructure to thousands of residents. Alongside modern transport and green spaces, the redevelopment will work to preserve Dharavi’s social and industrial identity. The initiative marks one of India’s most comprehensive urban renewal efforts to date.
