Deutsche Bahn's rail upgrades bring months of delays for northern Germany
Major rail upgrades by Deutsche Bahn (DB) are causing widespread disruptions for passengers across northern Germany. Since last August, travellers on the busy Hamburg-Berlin route have faced detours and replacement buses, with further delays now pushing the line’s reopening to mid-June.
Now, another critical route is set for extensive work. Starting 2 October, the Hannover-Berlin line will undergo large-scale modernisation, bringing track upgrades and new signalling systems. The changes will severely cut services and add long delays for thousands of daily commuters and long-distance passengers. The Hamburg-Berlin route has been under construction since last summer as part of DB’s broader plan to modernise Germany’s most vital high-speed links. Originally expected to finish earlier, the project now aims for a mid-June completion. Until then, passengers will continue relying on diverted trains and replacement buses.
From October, the Hannover-Berlin line will face even greater disruption. Long-distance services through Wolfsburg will halt entirely, while Helmstedt will see sharply reduced connections. The ICE route via Kassel, linking Braunschweig to Frankfurt, will also close completely during the work.
Journey times between Hannover and Berlin will stretch by up to 80 minutes, with trains running just once per hour. International travellers on the Amsterdam-Berlin route will face even longer waits—only one train every four hours—and trips could take 70 minutes more than usual.
The upgrades include track renewals and advanced signalling technology, designed to improve reliability and capacity. But for months, passengers will navigate fewer services, longer trips, and alternative transport options. The Hamburg-Berlin line is now set to reopen in mid-June after nearly a year of delays. Meanwhile, the Hannover-Berlin route will face months of reduced services and extended travel times from October. DB’s modernisation push aims to strengthen key rail links, but the work will continue disrupting journeys for thousands of passengers in the coming months.
