Deutsche Bahn will carry out a major upgrade of the heavily used rail route between Hanau and Fulda. The work begins on August 13, 2027, and will last until February 4, 2028. The project aims to renew key infrastructure along the busy corridor.

The overhaul will focus on the stretch between Gelnhausen and Fulda, covering tracks, switches, signals, and control systems. Sleepers, ballast, and entire sections of track will be replaced as part of the modernisation. Stations along the Kinzig Valley—including Wirtheim, Bad Soden-Salmünster, Steinau, Schlüchtern, and Flieden—will also receive upgrades.

At these stations, Deutsche Bahn will build new platforms, weather shelters, and accessibility features. Pedestrian underpasses and platform canopies will be refurbished to improve passenger experience. The project is part of a wider plan to overhaul over 40 high-traffic rail sections across Germany, consolidating years of planned work into a shorter timeframe. During construction, local trains between Langenselbold and Fulda will be replaced by buses. Long-distance services will be rerouted to minimise disruption for travellers.

The upgrades will renew critical infrastructure along the Hanau–Fulda route. Once complete, the improvements are set to enhance reliability and capacity for both passenger and freight services. The work is scheduled to finish by early February 2028.
