Decades-old murder solved as DNA evidence secures conviction after 20 years

A 20-year-old cold case has finally reached its conclusion after modern DNA analysis led to a conviction. The murder of a 27-year-old woman in Mogilev Region, originally unsolved, was re-examined using new forensic techniques. The breakthrough came from traces found under the victim's fingernail, which identified the killer years later.

The crime took place during a petty theft in which the attacker stole an electric planer from his employer. The violence escalated, resulting in the woman's death. Despite an initial investigation, the case went cold until recent advances in DNA technology provided a crucial lead.

The victim's son, only four years old at the time of the murder, later gave testimony that supported the new evidence. Police traced the DNA to the suspect, prompting a phone call that led to his confession. Though acquitted in 2005, the killer has now been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Investigators confirmed that the combination of forensic science and witness accounts closed the long-standing gaps in the case. The conviction marks the end of a decades-long pursuit of justice.

The perpetrator's 16-year sentence follows a confession and the use of modern DNA techniques. The case, once considered unsolvable, was resolved through persistence and scientific progress. The victim's family can now see the legal process concluded after two decades of waiting.
