Davao Occidental eyes new airport to boost regional growth and connectivity
Plans for a new airport in Davao Occidental are under review by the Regional Development Council (RDC). The project aims to improve transport links and support economic growth in the province. If approved, it would join existing upgrades to Mati Airport in Davao Oriental as part of a wider regional development strategy.
The idea of a second major airport in the Davao region first emerged in 2015. At the time, the RDC suggested possible locations in Santa Maria (Davao Occidental), Panabo City, Tagum City, and the Island Garden City of Samal (Davao del Norte). Now, the focus has shifted to Malita, the provincial capital, as a potential site for the proposed facility.
Currently, Davao Occidental has only one private airstrip in Malita, which sees little use. The new airport would address this gap by providing modern infrastructure for passengers and cargo. Plans include a passenger terminal, extended runways and taxiways, larger parking areas, and dedicated spaces for ground services and emergency teams. The project forms part of the broader Davao Region Development Master Plan. Alongside this, the RDC is also upgrading Mati Airport in Davao Oriental, which will feature similar improvements. Priscilla Sonido, regional director of the Department of Economy, Planning and Development, has publicly backed the initiative, citing its potential to enhance connectivity and local business opportunities. However, no final decisions have been made. The proposal remains in the planning phase while further studies assess its feasibility and impact.
The RDC continues to evaluate the airport’s viability, with Malita as the leading candidate site. If constructed, the facility would become a key transport hub for Davao Occidental, complementing ongoing upgrades at Mati Airport. The next steps depend on the outcome of ongoing feasibility studies.
