Colorado's bold new campaign targets distracted driving dangers head-on

Colorado is stepping up efforts to tackle distracted driving with a new awareness campaign. The Colorado State Patrol will launch Seconds Matter in April, aiming to highlight the dangers of taking one's focus off the road. Officials stress that even brief distractions can lead to serious crashes. Last year, the Colorado State Patrol investigated over 3,700 crashes linked to distracted driving. Activities like using a phone, eating, or adjusting controls can divert a driver's attention in seconds—long enough to cause a collision.

The state's hands-free law, introduced to curb risky behaviour, has already shown results. Data from smartphone apps and sensors reveal a 4.7% drop in distracted driving since the law took effect. Authorities estimate this decline has prevented nearly 600 crashes, over 400 injuries, and six deaths across Colorado. Shoshana Lew, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation, has reinforced the message. She warned that no phone notification or task is worth risking lives. The *Seconds Matter* campaign will run throughout the summer, urging drivers to stay fully focused on the road.

The push to reduce distracted driving continues as Colorado builds on early progress. With stricter laws and ongoing education, officials hope to further cut crashes and save lives. The campaign's success will depend on drivers making safer choices behind the wheel.
