Coconut Grove's quiet luxury lures tech billionaires and celebrities alike

Coconut Grove, Miami-Dade County’s oldest neighbourhood, is attracting fresh attention from wealthy buyers. Founded in the 1870s and annexed by Miami in 1925, the area has long been a magnet for artists, celebrities, and now tech billionaires. Google co-founder Larry Page recently invested over $188 million in local properties, adding to its prestige. The neighbourhood’s transformation began in the 1960s when it earned the nickname 'The Grove' and drew Bohemian artists, musicians, and writers. By the 1980s, Miami’s cocaine boom flooded money into the area, fuelling new residential developments. Over time, it became a haven for high-profile figures like Madonna, LeBron James, Sylvester Stallone, and even inventor Alexander Graham Bell.

Today, Coconut Grove retains a tight-knit yet discreet community. Residents value privacy, maintaining what locals call a culture of 'respectful distance.' Wealthy newcomers now seek luxury homes with private docks, infinity pools, and the freedom to walk without security. One such property, a $18.9 million estate with grand living spaces and hand-carved stone details, is currently on the market. Lourdes Alatriste of Douglas Elliman notes the asking price is slightly below initial expectations.

Alatriste describes Coconut Grove as a 'hidden gem,' offering waterfront access, lush parks, boutique stores, and family-friendly amenities. The blend of history, exclusivity, and modern comforts continues to lure affluent buyers looking for more than just a home. Coconut Grove’s appeal lies in its mix of old-world charm and high-end living. With tech moguls and celebrities investing heavily, the neighbourhood remains a sought-after retreat. Its reputation as a secluded yet vibrant enclave shows no signs of fading.
