Chaos on A27 motorway as fires, crashes, and reckless drivers strike
A series of incidents disrupted traffic on the A27 motorway over the weekend. Early on Sunday, a wrong-way driver was spotted near Bremerhaven, while a crash caused by hail-slicked roads left a car severely damaged. Separately, a vehicle fire and an uninsured motorist also led to police action in the region.
The first incident occurred on Saturday when a car caught fire on the A27 near Bremerhaven. The blaze completely destroyed the engine bay, though the 37-year-old driver from the Emsland region escaped with minor injuries. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
A few hours later, at around 4:50 a.m. on Sunday, a red Volkswagen Golf was reported driving the wrong way on the same motorway. Police confirmed the vehicle was travelling against traffic, though no further details on the driver or potential consequences were immediately available. Meanwhile, near Schwanewede, a 51-year-old man from Hemmingen lost control of his car due to hail-slicked roads. The vehicle crashed into a guardrail, causing an estimated €25,000 in damage. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed. Investigations later revealed the car had been fitted with summer tyres, which may have contributed to the loss of control. In a separate case, a 32-year-old man from Offenbach was found to have been driving without valid insurance since early February. Criminal proceedings have now been initiated against him.
The incidents highlight ongoing risks on the A27, from hazardous weather conditions to reckless driving. Police continue to monitor the motorway, often using mobile speed cameras to enforce traffic laws. Investigations into the fire and wrong-way driving remain open.
